MINDFUL MOMENTS In the rush and flurry of the ‘doing’, tired - TopicsExpress

MINDFUL MOMENTS In the rush and flurry of the ‘doing’, tired parents and overworked professionals are at risk of not seeing exactly where they are, in each moment. The enormous rush of thoughts and emotions a crying baby can trigger is a prime example. As professionals we may be at risk of not seeing the parental state for what it is, so events can be dismissed as ‘just crying’ or ‘just a passing phase’ – for the baby and parent there is a very real here and now factor that can overwhelm logical thought processes and minimize the capacity to cope with the situation. When a baby cries, parents may find it helpful to just be pay attention to THAT moment, not the eternal ‘what if this goes on like it did last time?’ or ‘how do I keep doing this?’ or ‘here we go again I can’t do this’ and the flood of similar thoughts. How about focussing on that very moment, what is happening right now; where are your feet? Can you feel the floor beneath them? What does it feel like? What is your breathe doing, take a breath and let it out, feeling the air against your nostrils. Think for a split second and be aware of experiences. It sounds so simple that is seems petty in the grand scheme of events at the time, but in fact, that moment of attention to you, in that split second you stop and create an awareness of other internal experiences, can change the frantic pathways your brainwaves were about to travel. And if you have ever had to repeatedly respond to a sleep disturbed baby or child, you know where THAT brain can go. Try it and if you like what you feel, look more into Mindfulness and Mindful motherhood and parenting.
