MINDFULNESS Courses with Reinhard Kowalski CULTIVATING THE SKILLS TO FREE YOURSELF FROM STRESS, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION What are MBCT and MBSR? The Mindfulness courses that are becoming increasingly popular have grown from research in the USA by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He found that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was enormously empowering for patients with physical problems such as chronic pain, hypertension, and heart disease, as well as for psychological problems such as anxiety and stress. Professor Mark Williams and colleagues adapted the USA programme so it could be used especially for people who had suffered repeated bouts of depression in their lives. They called their programme Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). It is a form ofskills-training that helps deal with physical and emotional problems by combining modern cognitive therapy techniques with ancient meditation practices. Research showed that taking the Mindfulness classes halved the risk of relapse in people who had been clinically depressed 3 or more times (sometimes for twenty years or more). Since then, further research has shown that MBCT is effective in helping people suffering from a range of emotional and other problems, such as chronic fatigue, anxiety and panic. How will Mindfulnesspractice help you? It will help you discover what makes you vulnerable to emotional problems, and why/ how you often make it worse by trying to escape from them. It will help you see the connection between emotional distress and the often unhelpful ways of thinking that you have grown used to. You will become familiar with the workings of your mind by learning to become an observer of your mental and emotional processes, rather than repeatedly getting drawn into the old dysfunctional patterns of suffering. You will learn effective ways of releasing yourself from those habitual patterns. As a result you will have more energy to approach life’s challenges in a constructive and kind way. Mindfulness will give you the opportunity to bring more peace, balance and strength into your life. This will help you to discover a different way of knowing yourself and the world. Mindfulness at the Bagnall Centre In our Mindfulness courses you will learn the main meditation practices from the MBCT and MBSR programmes. We will also use energy work and chakra meditations to widen your meditation repertoire and to supply you with additional powerful healing tools. Many of the meditation and healing practices are from Reinhard’s Mindfulness and Mindbalancing Handbook (Speechmark, 2011). Check Reinhard’s website for more details: mind-balancing.co.uk Can I benefit from Mindfulness if I have not been clinically anxious or depressed? Yes. People can benefit from mindfulness whether they have a specific problem or not. We all have times in our lives when we experience difficulty, stress and struggle; and for some of us this is our daily experience. Mindfulness helps us see with greater clarity how we may approach each moment skilfully, taking more pleasure in the goodthings that often go unnoticed or unappreciated, and dealing more effectively with the difficulties we encounter, both real and imagined.
