MISCONCEPTIONS OR MISCHIEF?? It was at a campaign rally for the election of Late Yaradua as President in 2007 that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo the then President declared that the 2007 CIVILIAN TO CIVILIAN TRANSITION would be a DO OR DIE AFFAIR. In essence, he meant that the transition devoid of military incursion MUST BE DONE SUCCESSFULLY. It would be noted that all Nigerias earlier attempts at civilian to civilian transition had always been aborted. Till today, many erroneously interpret that statement to mean Obasanjo was saying PDP winning was a do or die affair!! Could this be a misconception or pure mischief?? President Jonathan had during a Presidential media chat declared that he would not follow the pattern of Late Yaradua to PUBLICLY declare his assets. He had explained that the constitution did not require Public declaration of assets. The National Code of Conduct act stipulates that all public officers must declare their assets on assumption of office and upon leaving office but never mandated a public declaration. The President had unceremoniously declared his assets (and so did I). Presently, many erroneously represent that as a carpet statement that Jonathan REFUSED TO DECLARE HIS ASSETS!! Misconception or Mischief?? Also at another Presidential media chat, President Jonathan had given reasons for the slow pace of prosecution of corruption cases. He frowned at a practice where cases (according to the penal code) of STEALING are being handled by the EFCC rather than the Nigerian POLICE. He opined that EFCC should only be concerned with cases of OFFICIAL AND FINANCIAL CORRUPTION so as to ensure proper prosecutions. Today, many bandy it around that the President said STEALING IS NOT CORRUPTION!! Misconception or Mischief?? I was privileged to watch live proceedings of the events where these statements were made. However, many didnt and as such just picked the misplaced versions flying around online. Its however important that many of these statements be put in proper perspectives. I still dey come.... 9JA 4 LIFE
