MK Spinners 10 MK Rovers 0 5 November 2014 Remember remember the fifth of November. A night Rovers will want to forget! MK Rovers were looking forward to this match the way a turkey looks forward to Christmas. The Spinners were the hottest of hot favourites following their previous maximum against Rovers. In fact, the only way Rovers could possibly win this encounter is if the folk music group The Spinners, popular in the 60s and 70s, were to somehow turn up in place of the usual team. If the final score was anything other than 10 - 0, Spinners would surely see this as points dropped. If Rovers were to pick up anything from tonight, it is points gained. So with nothing to lose, Rovers are playing for pride and perhaps gaining the moral victory by taking some games to four legs. As the match progressed, it became clear that Spinners were not in a charitable mood. With Alan comfortably beating Dave in 3, Craig beating James in 3 and Gary Jones beating Mervyn in 3. At this rate we would all be home before the 10 oclock news! The doubles saw Rovers first leg as they went down 3 1. Dave then took a 2 games to 1 lead against Craig only to be pegged back to a decider. Craig staying calm and relying on his topspin, while Daves reliable blocking was no match in the fifth. The next close game of the evening was Gary against James with James taking a 2 games to 0 lead and Gary taking the next 2. The decider was a close encounter with both players holding the lead but James coming back from 5 1 down to having 2 match points and another in deuce. Gary held his nerve and dipped over line in what was the best game of the evening. This encounter and the previous meeting of these 2 sides emphasises the gap between the top and bottom of the premier division. Spinners marching on towards another title whilst Rovers drifting further away from the rest towards a season in division one. This match could have replayed every week for as long as Dave Wackrill owned his last pair of shorts and Rovers would not win this fixture.
