MMM: If the talent experts at the BBC had their way, there may have been no David Bowie for us to deem fashionable. The Daily Mail in the UK reports that Bowie was among several classic rockers who had rocky auditions before the BBCs Talent Selection Group, which had the task of selecting performers on BBC programs (these reviews were discovered for a BBC Radio 4 doc called Auditioning For Auntie). In 1965, Bowie performed Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Poppins, a rendition termed amateur sounding, while Bowie was called a vocalist who sings wrong notes and out of tune. Meanwhile, Elton John passed his 1968 audition, though the Group said he performed pretentious material...sung in an extremely dull fashion without any feeling and precious little musical ability. Others with less-than-glowing BBC impressions included The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who and Marc Bolan.
