MODERN INDIAN HISTORY;POST 1947 INDIA Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of India on 26th January,1950.Jawahar Lal Nehru wanted Dr C.Rajgopalachari , Governor General of India, to become the President as he thought Dr. Prasad was a conservative, traditionalist and somewhat obscurantist person, but most Congress leaders favoured Dr Prasad. His first act was to shift all Muslim servants from his wing in Rashtrapati Bhawan.which annoyed Nehru. He then went to Kashi to wash the feet of the sadhus.Feet touching of sadhus became sanctified from then onwards. He also visited Gujarat to instal the Shivlingam in the newly built Somnath temple. Dr Prasad lived a very simple life even in Rashtrapati Bhawan. The President had inherited all the financial allotments enjoyed by the Viceroy, including the very substantial entertainment allowance. But Dr Prasad did not spend more than Rs.225/- PM on entertainment.
