MONDAY RUNDOWN Hey Folks, Happy Monday! Lots on the NLwx menu this week, here is whats ahead.... Cooling Down & Clearing Out After an impressive warm stretch on the Island, temperatures are falling across the Island and in fact right across the Province and were heading back to seasonal highs for a few days. Highs near freezing for the Island and highs near the minus double digit mark for Labrador look set for today through Wednesday. The Low which has bringing us the mild air and also the unsettled clouds, drizzle, showers & even thunderstorms is moving off to the East and an area of High pressure is sinking into the region which will keep things quiet for a few days. Showers & drizzle mixed with flurries this afternoon will clear out for Western & Central Newfoundland this evening with a pleasant Tuesday and Wednesday ahead. St. Johns and Eastern Newfoundland will see lingering drizzle today, tonight (mixed with freezing drizzle) and into Tuesday, before clearing Tuesday evening with a bright and seasonal Wednesday scheduled. Thursday-Friday Low Our next low is set to roll out of the Great Lakes and into Atlantic Canada on Wednesday, before arriving in NL on Thursday. After some shuffling on the track and setup last week, forecast models are in pretty good agreement now that the centre of the Low will track into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which will bring more of the Island into the warm sector of the system. We could see some mixing with Snow early Thursday over Central & West (especially in the high elevations) however this primarily looks like a rain event for the Island with temps rising into the mid single digits. Labrador wont get into the action until Thursday night and Friday, when HV-GB and the Southeast looks set to see some accumulating snow. LONG RANGE The map attached is a snapshot of the Euro model snowfall projection over the next 10 days, up to Christmas Eve. Its been quite the first half of December! Weve already had 6 days this month with double digits in St. Johns plus 1 day at 9.7° and just 3 days with highs below 0° through the first half of the month. Following last years coldest December on record, this has been welcomed start to the month for many. Although it likely wont match or surpass the epic December of 2010 for warmest on record this December isnt showing any signs of a major Arctic cold shot through Christmas Eve either. (Click here for a recap of December 2010: cbc.ca/nl/blogs/ryansnoddon/2011/01/warmest-december-on-record.html) December Snowfall amounts are currently just 1.2 cm in St. Johns and just 0.4 cm in Gander. Forecast models are flirting with a chance of some snow this weekend on the Island, in behind our Thurs/Fri system and a couple of systems will need to be watched as they look set pass to our South early next week. That said, As Of Now long range guidance isnt projecting anything major snowfall wise on the Island through Christmas Eve. Obviously this can change in a hurry, but one record I will be watching, is lowest December snowfall, especially here in St. Johns. Previous record for St. Johns is 8.8 cm of Snow set back in that balmy December of 2010. Of course, just one system could put this possibility to rest, but its one worth watching for sure. :) Full tonight, Tuesday & 7 day forecast details this evening on Here & Now. CBC-TV at 5:30pm NT. See you then! Ryan #nlwx
