MORE BAD NEWS FOR IPSWICH AND THE SOMERSET AS ABBOTT’S AXE CONTINUES TO FALL The Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann today broke the bad news to Ipswich Hospice, Ipswich Rugby League and Riverview Neighbourhood House that the Coalition has decided to divert the funds already promised to them to somewhere else, as stated in their MYEFO document released yesterday. The news came as a terrible blow to these organisations which were looking forward to receiving the funds. Ipswich Hospice was promised $100,000 under the former Federal Labor government to enhance palliative care services to the community. “This funding was to be allocated through the Liveable Communities Program which was designed to support local projects that build stronger communities,” Mr Neumann said. In August this year, $30,000 in funding through the former Federal Labor government’s Building Multicultural Communities Program was granted to Ipswich Rugby League to install two all-weather shade sails for spectators and less than a month later, a further $250,000 in funds through Federal Labor’s Sporting Communities Initiative was allocated to go towards capital infrastructure projects for the Ipswich Rugby League North Ipswich Reserve, building on its investment in local sporting communities. “Ipswich Rugby League was counting on the funds to help deliver upgrades to dressing rooms and administration facilities, along with additional shade and storage areas,” Mr Neumann said. Riverview Neighbourhood House was promised $133,200 through the former Federal Labor government’s Building Multicultural Communities Program to help renovate its community hall, making it more comfortable and practical for the various community and cultural groups who use the centre. “Riverview Neighbourhood House has a long history of providing activities and services for families from a variety of ethnic backgrounds,” Mr Neumann said. More than $13 million has been ripped out of Ipswich and the Somerset since the Coalition government gained power in early September. This includes those additional projects flagged for funding through the former Federal Labor government’s Regional Development Australia Fund: • $10 million for the Centenary Sports Hub at Springfield • $2 million for a flood recovery and resilience hall at St Joseph’s School, North Ipswich • $349,000 for a hardstand at Willowbank Raceway • $219,000 for the Lowood Pool The funding for all these programs was budgeted for and included in the Pre-Election Economic and Fiscal Outlook. These are disgraceful and cruel cuts from Tony Abbott. Clearly the Coalition has made no attempt to stand up for people in Ipswich and the Somerset as the government continues on its savage savings crusade.
