Mass stranding of jelly-like ocean creatures at Cabrillo Beach surprises beachgoers Juan Carlos stepped over dozens of dead tiny bluish-purple creatures as he pulled his paddleboard onto the sand at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro on Tuesday afternoon. The Velella velellas, commonly called by-the-wind sailors or sailor jellies, drift in large groups on the ocean surface, their float-like bodies buoyed by warm currents and their sail-like fins pushed by the wind. “They look like the Portuguese man o’ war but they have a beautiful blue color,” Carlos said. “The color is kind of unique.” Visitors to Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach on Monday and Tuesday may also have noticed the mass stranding of the jellyfish-like animals, though they are only about 6 centimeters wide and their blue floats had rotted away quickly, leaving their sails looking like tiny crumpled plastic cups. Most of them appeared to have been stranded Sunday and Monday. “There were a lot of them and they were everywhere,” Carlos said of his first Velella velella sighting Monday. Though the sailor jellies are related to Portuguese man o’ war, they don’t deliver a painful sting to humans.
