PROVINCETOWN — Originally expected to last two or three years, the five larger-than-life photos of Portuguese women adorning the outside of the building at the end of Fisherman’s Wharf have kept watch over the harbor for a decade now. But they are beginning to show signs of wear, and one of them came down in a storm this winter. Entitled “They Also Faced the Sea,” the installation is a tribute to the Portuguese community and Provincetown’s fishing heritage and has captured the attention of millions of people who have strolled down MacMillan Pier. The photo that fell from the town pier, of Almeda Segura, was installed on the south side of the structure, greeting people who come to Provincetown by ferry and other seafaring vessels. The women in the other photos, from left to right, are Eva Silva, Mary Jason, Bea Cabral and Frances Raymond.
