MORE BYRNE—IN SPITE OF J.B.s unfortunate...okay MORE than unfortunate...outright mean and over-the-top statements about a certain inkers work (that many generally love) over his pencils, our own David Miller may have said it best when he opined: “Yknow, despite our love for Perez, Byrne OWNED the last half of the 70s.” He and George Pérez hit around 75 or so and dominated like mad—but JB got Claremont & The X-Men and even as G.P. was getting better by leaps and bounds, Byrne set the pace for the second half of the Bronze Age and carried the ball like The Hulk running downhill on a Himalaya mountainside. Im a fan of “Early Byrne”, covering the end of his Iron Fist run, which featured his “I-Can-Draw-Any-Iconic-Marvel-Character-They-Throw-At-Me” period. These were marked by more than a few singular dead-on character shots that burned themselves into my comics-creating psyche. Here are a few from that period from late 75 to about late 77 or so. Im repeating the “Thats a b-a-a-a-a-a-ad man” shot of Cap that David McClain posted below but also note the stellar TChalla Byrne whipped up for the cover of Jungle Action #23. I think I bought THAT one TWICE when it came out. One to hold in my hands regularly and the other to simply look at and cherish as a go-to inspiration. Say what you wanna (And God knows, J.B. does without much thought as to feelings about it) but he strode the comics world like a colossus (pun unintended) then. THATS the artist I wanna think about, not the “Hot Take” industry pundit we see too much of in the later years.
