MORE TO DISCOVER One of my favorite stories is of a student who traveled the world to meet and learn from a great sage. Upon meeting his master, the student immediately began telling him all the beliefs he had acquired on his journey. As the teacher listened intently, he poured the pupil cup of tea. The student took a breath from speaking just long enough to notice the cup had become full yet the teacher kept pouring. “Master, my cup is full. Why are you still pouring?” the student asked. “You are much like this cup,” said the sage. “So full of knowledge, that there is little room for growth.” The student had received his first lesson from his teacher: The beginning of wisdom is knowing that you don’t know. This lesson is especially important for those of us already on a spiritual path. After a few years of dedicated studies, we often feel like we have learned the truth. It means that we will soon learn the real truth, that there is always more to learn. After all, if we had learned all there is to learn – or learned enough, even – why is it that we still have questions, problems, and chaos in our lives? There is a spiritual wellspring that contains all of the solutions and answers that we seek in life, and it becomes more accessible through the understanding that we do not know nearly as much as we think. Unfortunately, when we think that we understand more than we do, we limit the inherent gifts of this wellspring. It only begins to yield its cornucopia to us when we understand that there is so much we dont know. We believe that we understand the Bible, science, our spouse, our friends, our children – but in reality, there is so much more to discover. We are all like the student whose cup was too filled with his own thoughts, ideas, and beliefs. The more we let go, the more we can open ourselves to understand even greater truths. By knowing that we don’t know, we open ourselves to learn so much more. صورة: MORE TO DISCOVER Weekly Tune-Up by Yehuda Berg One of my favorite stories is of a student who traveled the world to meet and learn from a great sage.
