MORNING PRAYER Wednesday, 12 November 2014 Memorial of Saint Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom. One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving Blessed are you, Sovereign God, ruler and judge of all, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of this age that is passing away may the light of your presence which the saints enjoy surround our steps as we journey on. May we reflect your glory this day and so be made ready to see your face in the heavenly city where night shall be no more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Trust in God As the deer longs for the water brooks, • so longs my soul for you, O God. My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God; • when shall I come before the presence of God? My tears have been my bread day and night, • while all day long they say to me, ‘Where is now your God?’ Now when I think on these things, I pour out my soul: • how I went with the multitude and led the procession to the house of God, With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, • among those who kept holy day. Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, • and why are you so disquieted within me? O put your trust in God; • for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42.1-7 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 23 I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. The Lord is my shepherd; • therefore can I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures • and leads me beside still waters. R He shall refresh my soul • and guide me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; • for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. R You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; • you have anointed my head with oil and my cup shall be full. Surely goodness and loving mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, • and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. O God, our sovereign and shepherd, who brought again your Son Jesus Christ from the valley of death, comfort us with your protecting presence and your angels of goodness and love, that we also may come home and dwell with him in your house for ever. Psalm 25 Remember, Lord, your compassion and love. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; O my God, in you I trust; • let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies triumph over me. Let none who look to you be put to shame, • but let the treacherous be shamed and frustrated. Make me to know your ways, O Lord, • and teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, • for you are the God of my salvation; for you have I hoped all the day long. Remember, Lord, your compassion and love, • for they are from everlasting. R Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions, • but think on me in your goodness, O Lord, according to your steadfast love. Gracious and upright is the Lord; • therefore shall he teach sinners in the way. He will guide the humble in doing right • and teach his way to the lowly. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth • to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. R For your name’s sake, O Lord, • be merciful to my sin, for it is great. Who are those who fear the Lord? • Them will he teach in the way that they should choose. Their soul shall dwell at ease • and their offspring shall inherit the land. The hidden purpose of the Lord is for those who fear him • and he will show them his covenant. My eyes are ever looking to the Lord, • for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. R Turn to me and be gracious to me, • for I am alone and brought very low. The sorrows of my heart have increased; • O bring me out of my distress. Look upon my adversity and misery • and forgive me all my sin. Look upon my enemies, for they are many • and they bear a violent hatred against me. O keep my soul and deliver me; • let me not be put to shame, for I have put my trust in you. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, • for my hope has been in you. Deliver Israel, O God, • out of all his troubles. Remember, Lord, your compassion and love. Free us, God of mercy, from all that keeps us from you; relieve the misery of the anxious and the ashamed and fill us with the hope of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. Daniel 5.13-end Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king said to Daniel, ‘So you are Daniel, one of the exiles of Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah? I have heard of you that a spirit of the gods is in you, and that enlightenment, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you. Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and tell me its interpretation, but they were not able to give the interpretation of the matter. But I have heard that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Now if you are able to read the writing and tell me its interpretation, you shall be clothed in purple, have a chain of gold around your neck, and rank third in the kingdom.’ Then Daniel answered in the presence of the king, ‘Let your gifts be for yourself, or give your rewards to someone else! Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king and let him know the interpretation. O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar kingship, greatness, glory, and majesty. And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed those he wanted to kill, kept alive those he wanted to keep alive, honoured those he wanted to honour, and degraded those he wanted to degrade. But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he acted proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was stripped from him. He was driven from human society, and his mind was made like that of an animal. His dwelling was with the wild asses, he was fed grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals, and sets over it whomsoever he will. And you, Belshazzar his son, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this! You have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven! The vessels of his temple have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines have been drinking wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know; but the God in whose power is your very breath, and to whom belong all your ways, you have not honoured. ‘So from his presence the hand was sent and this writing was inscribed. And this is the writing that was inscribed: mene, mene, tekel, and parsin. This is the interpretation of the matter: mene, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; tekel, you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting; peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.’ Then Belshazzar gave the command, and Daniel was clothed in purple, a chain of gold was put around his neck, and a proclamation was made concerning him that he should rank third in the kingdom. That very night Belshazzar, the Chaldean king, was killed. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old. Canticle A Song of the New Creation, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 28 (page 579), number 46 (page 598) or number 47 (page 599), may be said Refrain: I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. ‘I am the Lord, your Holy One, • the Creator of Israel, your King.’ Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, • a path in the mighty waters, ‘Remember not the former things, • nor consider the things of old. ‘Behold, I am doing a new thing; • now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? ‘I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, • to give drink to my chosen people, ‘The people whom I formed for myself, • that they might declare my praise.’ Isaiah 43.15, 16, 18, 19, 20c, 21 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Scripture Reading One or more readings appointed for the day are read. The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence. Revelation 7.1-4, 9-end After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind could blow on earth or sea or against any tree. I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to damage earth and sea, saying, ‘Do not damage the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have marked the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.’ And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the people of Israel: After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’ Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’ A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. The heavens bear witness to your wonders; I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. The assembly of your saints proclaims your truth; my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. from Psalm 89 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or the Te Deum Laudamus (A Song of the Church) (page 636) may be said Refrain: You will guide us with your counsel, O God, and afterwards receive us with glory. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
