MOSERAY FEDIKA ENHANCES EBOLA CONTACT TRACING IN PORT LOKO DISTRICT By Hassan Bruz Northern Bureau Chief I am sure it is now an undeniable fact that Port Loko is one on the Districts with a leading number of Ebola related cases in the Country. It is also a corresponding fact that it deserves immediate attention because of a couple of reasons .This District deserves to be redeemed from this sort of decrepit ranking without further delay because of its strategic location. For you who would care to know, this is the official and most convenient gate way to and from the National Capital of Sierra Leone. Yes this is the District that harbours the International Airport and one of those were Mining Activities are being done at a large scale. For others, this is the District that is equally famous for its agricultural productivity. You can take the case of Rumbeh Swamp for the production of Wallah Rice or Baillor and Conakry which are the Fish Producing Ports. As outlined by the Port Loko District Council Chairman- Ahmid Munirr Fofana, it has always been a serious challenge for Local Authorities to be empowered at community levels to enable them carry out Ebola Massages. Indeed the situation is much more difficult for the Elected Local Authorities , especially for Ward Councillors. Even though this category of Local Authorities is not on monthly salary, yet these Authorities are required to provide leadership function in all forms of development in their respective Wards. In fact it is incumbent on Councillors to provide oversight function on either Council or Government activities. However the legislative mandate of Councillors to provide supervisory role and socio economic intervention has been so much dampened in recent times that, most find it quite difficult to pass on Ebola Massages in their Wards. The Problem seemed compounded by the declaration of a State of Emergency by His Excellency –President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma which requires Ward Councillors, Chairpersons of Councils and Majors to provide and support measures that are geared toward stopping the spread of the Ebola Virus. In his capacity as Chairman of the Port Loko District Council and President of the Local Councils of Sierra Leone, Ahmid Munirr Fofana said he has been able to realise that Councillors were undergoing excruciating pains in ensuring that the Orders of the President as contained in the Ebola Bye Laws are adhered to. He said it was in a bid to sort out ways through which these challenges could be minimised that he approached a philanthropist in the person of Moseray Fedika aka ‘Super’ who is also the Chief Executive Officer of African Minerals Company Limited for assistance. He said ‘Super’ was equally moved by the escalating figures of Ebola related cases in Port Loko District that he at once made a handsome donation. Chairman Ahmid Munirr Fofana told the Sierra Leone News Agency [SLENA] that, the amount of money Mr. Moseray Fedika gave to Council was used to procure over a hundred bags of Rice for Ward Councillors, Ward Committee Members and members of Staff of Council. He said a cash donation was also offered to the Beneficiaries in addition to the Rice. At the presentation ceremony of the consignment to the Chief Administrator - John Lahai Swaray for onward distribution, the Chairman said the offer of Mr. Fedika was not only a positive and patriotic response to the clarion call of President Ernest Bai Koroma for all well meaning Sierra Leoneans to come on board, but also a unique morale booster to the fight against Ebola in the District. He expressed optimism that Councillors would make proper use of the gesture to strengthen and intensify Contact Tracing measures of Ebola Persons in the District. Meanwhile the Chief Administrator –John Lahai Swaray and the Deputy Chairman of Council- Councillor Ibrahim Santigie Bangura have expressed profound thanks and appreciation to Chairman Ahmid Munirr Fofana for what they described as a timely gesture. They disclosed in their separate remarks that most activities in Council have been compelled to a standstill by the outbreak of the Ebola Virus in the Country. They further spoke on what they referred to as compounded challenges faced by the People, citing the situation of those living in quarantined homes and in a District that has already been isolated. They therefore commended the efforts of their Chairman for been able to cater for Councillors, Ward Committee Members, as well as the Staff of Council. On behalf of the Beneficiaries, the Chief Administrator and Deputy Council Chairman praised Mr. Moseray Fedika for his generosity and expressed optimism that the package will immensely motivate and enhance their efficiency in the aspect of Contact Tracing. The brief ceremony ended up with an appeal to the Descendants of Port Loko District to emulate such classic examples so far set by both Chairman Ahmid Munirr Fofana and Moseray Fedika aka ‘Super’-the Philanthropist. Below are some photos that would help you visualise how it all happened.........
