MOTHER IS THE FUNDAMENTAL AND IRREPLACEABLE TEACHER OF THE SOP OF HOW TO LIVE, MATERNAL LOVE IS A PERENNIAL EDUCATION 2013/5/10 The eve of a special day, dedicated to the Blessed Mother for her protection of all Cosmopolitan Chinese, which was the eve of Mother’s Day. The Gospel of that weekday Mass was(Jn 16, v 20-23) in which Jesus describes that the joy of mother to be overcomes any kind of pain including birth pangs; after the birth of her baby, her joy overwhelms so strongly that her birth pangs ever exited! By this beautiful description it seems that Jesus wants to declare that motherhood is joy, thus the word of mother is synonymous with joy, and further her joy is showering her unconditional and unreserved maternal love on her baby who consequently would be filled with happiness. Therefore motherhood is of mother, maternal love and joy, of whom born of human being, from who derived of life, love and joy. Subsequently life is synonymous with joy; one’s joy is to make others happy by loving even with birth pain, perhaps even with unconditional and unreserved sacrifices. But eventually obtains the unseen, unheard and undreamed of reward of eternal joy in Heaven. Hence mother is the fundamental and irreplaceable teacher, maternal love is a perennial education of the Standard Operation Procedure of how to live physically, humanly, Christianly. I still remember vividly the beautiful story told by Fr. C. Valls more than 60 years ago in Macau, a Spanish friar, a wonderful and well liked professor of Dogma, in one of his classes, that once Napoleon I had been asked about which age, a child should begin education? “20 years before the birth”, answered the French Emperor without hesitation.. Also many years ago, once when I was on duty at front desk of St. Francis Chapel on 20 Page Street, Providence, Rhode Island, a young mother with 3 youngsters about 1 or 2 years apart, dressed neatly with good manners, approached me for Mass car. I amazedly praised the young mother that her 3 youngsters are like 3 little angels. Eyeing and somewhat hinting the kids, she smilingly replied: “Thank you, Father, but they are sometimes like little devils at home”. I amusingly continued to say: “You are marvelous, cultivating or converting 3 little devils into 3 little angels, a superb job indeed”! The young mother and her 3 kids smiled broadly! Fr. Donald Hoag, Provincial of Holy Name Province gave me permission to come to Taiwan in 1965, with additional grants to take vacation back to the Province, to make Retreats or attend workshops with the friars in Kiryu-Shi, Gumma-Ken, Japan from 1965-1982 annually. He visited Taiwan twice. I was able driving from my Mission appeal in New Jersey to St. Francis Church, 135 West 3e1st Street, New York, New York for his funeral Mass June 1984 – Fr. Russell Becker helped me to park the car in a nearby parking lot with a charge of 7 dollars for overnight. It was my first and only time driving in the heart of New York City! Fr. Donald once told that one day 9:00am as entering the Confessional of St. Francis Church, 135 West 31st Street, New York, he noticed a woman kneeling nearby; over 2 hours later, coming out of the confessional he saw the woman still there. When he took his second shift at 3:00pm, the woman remaining at the same place, coming out of the Confessional shortly after 5:00pm, he saw the same person still at the same place, his worry and concern forced him to approach the woman saying: “Lady, I notice that you have been here all day long, can I be of any help?” “Thank you, Father, today is my son serving his death sentence! I have been here petitioning the Blessed Mother for his repentance and might be accepted by the Almighty and Compassionate God!” It seems that Fr. Donald as Military Chaplain in Europe, Provincial in the Province, Pastor in Woodridge, Chaplain to the Sisters in Ringwood, New Jersey, he always carried out his paternal duties with a maternal heart, so he could witness another type of “PIETA” inside of St. Francis Church, 135 West 31st Street, New York! I try with the best of my ability to translate the beautiful Chinese greetings of楊敦和former President of Fu-Jen Catholic University to me, as my greetings to you: “Always follow the Blessed Mother walking the WAY of Jesus, like Our Lady constantly live up to the TRUTH of Christ, may the Virgin Mary protect you with her maternal love for ever and ever! “
