Although expensive to manufacture, the compact car boasted an air-cooled engine and was initially a success for General Motors with annual sales often exceeding 200,000 units. Total sales from the nine years of production (1960-1969) totaling 1,786,243 cars. Following the safety issued raised about the car in Ralph Naders 1965 book, Unsafe at Any Speed, resulting in sales plummeting 95% between 1965 and 1969 and GM cancelled production of the car.
