MOVIE REVIEW--Transcendence. The movie wasnt a box office hit--thats ok, some movies are like Mopeds--theyre fun, but better enjoyed in privacy without your friends seeing you. Transcendence has an interesting premise and it raises some rather deep philosophical questions . The movie raises these philosophical issues --is there a danger to artificial intelligence; who should control technology as it becomes more interconnected, can technology become God-like, and is there a soul. All of these issues are raised and are central to the conflict between the protagonists (the anti-technology faction and Dr. Will Cater and his scientist wife). When Will is shot with a poisoned bullet in order to stop his research into artificial intelligence, his wife comes up with the brilliant idea of attempting to load his thoughts into an artificial intelligence computer. Did she capture his soul? Whatever she did, she, or Will has created a self thinking machine that has unlimited access to information and knowledge and can hack into any bank, government agency. The anti-technology faction recruits Wills former scientific peers to stop him, or stop his conscious. The movie starts slowly, but it is interesting. I think the script would have made a great book. Should you watch it? Well, if youre alone one night and want an intellectual sci-fi thriller, and no friends are around, I say go for it. I liked it
