MOVIE REVIEW “FAST & FURIOUS 6” [4.25/5] ... bit.ly/11nwgR4 I think it’s pretty safe to say none of the previous flicks in this series will ever be labelled high-brow; or even thought provoking for that matter. But then again, they’re not intended to be now are they? Fans (& I include myself in that) love these flicks for the hot cars, sheer stupidity & stunts that defy all laws of physics. These are big dumb action flicks. And they make no apologies for it. Fast 5 finished with our wanted anti-heroes Dom (Vin Diesel) & Brian (Paul Walker) retiring to the non-extradition paradise of the Canary Islands, with barely a care in the world. But naturally that all ends at the start of No. 6 with U.S. federal agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) landing on their doorstep, asking for their help in catching former British agent Shaw (Luke Evans). Shaw & his gang have taken to stealing classified computer equipment from military convoys. So the deal is, if Dom & his crew catch Shaw & his, Dom’s guys all get full pardons & can return to the US. But loving retirement, Dom’s initial reaction is to send Hobbs on his way. However that’d make for a very short movie. So the screenwriters throw in a sizable twist (as signposted at the end of Fast 5) - Dom learns that his long-term girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), whom he thought died in the 4th flick, now works for Shaw. Naturally the lure of discovering if his lady love is still alive is sufficient reason alone to start sniffing out Shaw’s trail. Gentlemen (& ladies) … START YOUR ENGINES!! Effectively, Fast & Furious 6 is a highlights reel from the past 5 films; but bigger. Bigger stunts/set-pieces/car chases/cheesy one-liners/bad-acting. Everything’s up a level; & that for me makes Fast 6 a top-notch guilty pleasure … & quite probably the most entertaining action flick of 2013 thus far. Also adding wait to the entertainment roller-coaster is the return of almost all the key players in Dom’s rag-tag gang - ladies-man Roman (Tyrese Gibson), gadget guy Tej (Ludacris), the quiet achiever Han (Sung Kang) & his girlfriend Giselle (Gal Gadot). And a welcome addition is women’s MMA champ Gina Carano, as Hobbs’ offsider Riley. The fight between her & Michelle Rodriguez (who knows a thing or 2 about throwing a punch from her big-screen debut in 2000’s Girlfight) is an absolute corker!! I’ll leave it there, because I’m either preaching to the converted (who’ve already pre-bought their tickets) or those who’d rather stab themselves in the eye with the end of a screwdriver than watch something so O.T.T. ridiculous. Oh, & make sure you stay for the post credits scene - you may well discover the answer to Fast fans biggest question of just where Tokyo Drift sits into the chronology of this rip-snorting series. Bring on Fast 7 in 13 months’ time. WOO HOO!!
