Wouldn’t it be nice to fly like a bird? Of course, just climb on - TopicsExpress

Wouldn’t it be nice to fly like a bird? Of course, just climb on a tree or a cliff and jump off. Riiight, you will end up splattered. To ensure we survive as species, mother nature has put a fear of heights into ground-walking creatures’ genetic makeup, and it demonstrates itself from the very early age. But man is not only a walking animal, he is a social creature too. How are we protected against making a social “jump off a cliff?” Well, how about a religion? I don’t know of any society that wouldn’t have some kind of religion. It’s the FEAR part of religion that is suppose to protect us from behaving too anti-socially (and thus self-destructively) in our pursuit of our own interests - the fear of being punished by god(s). For this detriment of fear to work, we must belief that there is a day of judgment. And for this to work, we must believe there is some kind of after-life. Perhaps that’s why most religions portray god as a male, because in a nuclear family it is usually the father who is the disciplinarian. In a healthy family the father is loved, but he is also respected, and that respect comes from the fear of his wrath. And so it is with a good god. He is not only a father we love, but he is also a lord whose wrath we must fear. We must respect and obey him – for our own good. For some reason this wisdom of religion escapes atheists. Is that why every atheist/communist experiment self-destructed? Is that’s why there is a saying: “Nations who do not fear a god end up fearing a tyrant.”
