MP launches drive for voter registration MYSORE: MP A H Vishwanath, who represents Mysore and Madikeri districts at the Parliament, on Thursday launched a drive to enroll people in the voters list at Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) Colony at Sattagalli. The Colony, having 485 houses of slum-dwellers, has around 800 voters. Speaking on the occasion, M Lakshmana, convener of Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore ( ACICM), charged DC C Shikha with failing to enroll potential voters to the list. The enrollment process, which began in September, has so far registered only 9,000 new voters. It has failed to get even four lakh people for registration, even when the districts have lakhs of voters. The drive is to accommodate maximum number of voters in the list, he said. Considering the need for an update list, the Election Commission has extended the final day for the registration from November 29 to December 6. But this will help with only a limited additions to the list. The government should make registration a round-the-year affair, he suggested. During the event, which was only meant for registration of voters, the MP was flooded with memoranda on different issues. While some sought houses under JnNURM project, others demanded amenities and transport. Vishwanath repeatedly told the residents that the event is only a platform for voter registration, and not a public grievances meeting. However, some women raised their voices and tried to make the MP hear their demands. The MP later warned people against trespassing the houses provide for the poor. He also assured them an anganwadi and a school for the children in the locality. timesofindia.indiatimes/city/mysore/MP-launches-drive-for-voter-registration/articleshow/26547324.cms
