MR. ROGERS STUDIES PROHIBITION IN THE SOUTH; DECIDES ITS NOT AN ISSUE THERE, BUT A PRIVILEGE. MACON, Ga., 16 October 1926. - I thought I would hear a lot of election excitement on account of being down here just two weeks before it comes off, but their elections were all held last August at the primaries. Republicans sometimes enter the race down here, as they are generously allowed to do so by a law, but of course they just go for the ride. Well, the same thing happens in New York State. They sometime put up a man against Al Smith, which is also permissible by law. Prohibition is never an issue in the South, their habits and their votes have nothing in common. They feel they are the originators of the still, and any legislation to permit large breweries would be unfair competition and would perhaps destroy the entire revenue of hundreds of thousands of small still owners, who have no other viable means of support. Corn likker is their product, and I cant blame them for voting to protect its life. You see, you must not condemn a people until you have been among them and can see and know their angle. I dont blame them for not wanting big corporation breweries to be allowed by law to try and change their tastes. We would be a fine liberty-loving country if we allowed a few Yankees to dictate to us what we could make and what we could drink. Prohibition isnt an issue down here; its a privilege. Yours, Will Rogers
