MRS Wings and Wheels Victory to Ted Christopher Waterford Speedbowl 8/9/2014 Ted Christopher of Plainville CT drew the outside pole to start in the Valenti Modified Racing Series portion of the Wings and Wheels 100, but couldnt hold back the determined pole sitter of Steve Masse from Bellingham MA as the two made nerf bar contact off turn four at the drop of the green. Masse, Christopher and Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley PA set a blazing pace trying to break away from a snarling pack behind them. Masse, not known for being conservative on the track, broke away slightly and started lapping competitors by the quarter-century mark. Back in the pack others were not being conservative either as MRS points leader Justin Bonsignore of Islip NY, Woody Pitkat of Stafford Springs CT and three-time winner Richard Savary of Canton MA closed in and dogged the back bumper of 4th place Anthony Nocella of Woburn MA. By lap 35 Nocellas #92 began to fade, and he gave up his fourth spot, dropping back to seventh. A lap 42 caution finally halted Masses charge as Carl Medieros of Westport MA ended his race stuffed into the front straightaway wall. The restart brought Masse and Christopher back together and T. C. was not to be denied this time as he got the jump on Masse and powered the Joe Brady owned #00 to the lead. Christopher was now in clean air, in a fast race car, on a very familiar track, and that combination could not be beat. The consistent performances that Bonsignore has shown this year was paying off again as he used the outside lane to pass Masse for second by lap 43. With the race just over halfway, hot shoes waiting farther back in the pack started making their charge to the front. Pitkat raced by Savarys #99 for fifth and Tommy Barrett Jr. of Millis, MA. who started 17th now closed in on the leaders. A lap 78 yellow flag for a spin by Dylan Kopek, of Palmer MA gave the drivers a moment to catch their breath. When racing resumed the top six were Christopher and Bonsignore followed by Masse, Pitkat, Savary and Barrett. Barrett was now on a mission as he moved by Savary for fifth, at the same time Pitkat raced past Masse for third. Now it was Barretts turn to work over Masse as the two ran side-by-side for three laps before Barrett prevailed taking over the fourth spot. T. C. must have been smiling when he looked in his rear view mirror and saw the battle for each position behind him. With four laps to go the third caution flew for Nocellas crash in turn three and now it was a four lap shootout. When the green came out Barrett and Pitkat battled each other down the front stretch and the two made contact sending both cars crashing against the front straightaway wall collecting eight more competitors with them. When the dust and smoke settled Eric Goodale, Norm Wrenn, Jonny Kay, Richard Savary, Donnie Lashua, Geoff Gernhard, Rowan Pennink and Todd Szegedys race cars laid bent and twisted on the track. Barrett immediately exited his wrecked racer and confronted Pitkat about the incident. After a short red flag period the final three laps were run with Christopher edging out Bonsignore by just 0.223 seconds. Masse was third over the line. Chris Pasteryak of Lisbon CT, who suffered front end damage in both his heat and conci qualifiers, did a remarkable job of coming home forth. Tom Abele Jr. of Baltic CT rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Anthony Nocella – Ted Christopher – Woody Pitkat. Conci winner, #68 Keith Rocco race. VMRS Wings and Wheels 100 track.
