“When they share their support, I feel happy that I’m not - TopicsExpress

“When they share their support, I feel happy that I’m not alone when I’m fighting for Hong Kong democracy.” This is just one of many examples of the way that social media has played into the Hong Kong protests that are still going on - protesters know that the world is watching in a way that wasnt possible before. Furthermore, as has happened in other recent protest movements, it has served as the primary form of communication between protesters since social media technology is new and fluid enough to be near impossible for a government - even a repressive government - to be able to contain. While the government has done everything in their power to keep information from reaching the mainland, motivated internet users have figured out ways of jumping the firewall by writing in code, deliberately misspelling key words and using proxy servers to hide their IP address. The word has spread to some on the mainland and supporters of the protest movement there have shared the umbrella image which has become the symbol of the movement (protesters have used umbrellas to defend themselves from pepper spray). Tiananmen Square is happening again... but this time it may be more than the government can contain.
