MSO Principal Clarinet, Paul Schulz, has some observations to share: It seems like only yesterday that I moved to the Twin Cities. That year was 1991. The year of Desert Storm. The year of the infamous Halloween Blizzard. And the year I joined the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (“MSO”). For 23 years I have had the pleasure of watching the MSO grow from a pretty good community orchestra into something astounding. Today MSO rivals many professional orchestras in quality of music, and it just keeps getting better and better. Professional musicians seek us out as an orchestra with which they want to solo. Internationally celebrated composers ask us to premiere their works. There is increased interest to broadcast our concerts on public radio, and every year new venues ask us to put them on our concert schedule. Sometimes its a bit intimidating to realize that I hold a principal chair in an orchestra of this caliber. Can you believe that we dont charge admission to our concerts? You can come to any of our concerts for free! But that doesnt mean that MSO has no expenses. We must rent music, rehearsal/concert space and percussion equipment. We pay our Music Director and General Manager stipends (far less than what they deserve). We commission new music, and we feature professional musicians as soloists. We hire actors and narrators for our family concerts. Today is Give to the Max Day, and if youre like me, youre considering many worthy charitable organizations for your financial support. Please consider helping MSO continue to make high quality music with a generous donation. Its easy and fast to donate; simply visit https://givemn.org/organization/Metropolitan-Symphony-Orchestral-Association. Your donation will help keep the music you love playing for years to come. Then come to our concerts, sit back and enjoy the music! Thanks so much for your support!
