MT Red Cross Opens Shelter for Moose Meadow Wildfire Evacuees in Phillipsburg Bozeman, July 28, 2013 – American Red Cross of Montana volunteers have just opened a Red Cross shelter in Phillipsburg for evacuees from the Moose Meadow wildfire. The Shelter is located in Granite High School 407 Schnepel Street in Phillipsburg. “All evacuees from the Moose Meadow fire are welcome at our shelter. Our volunteers are ready with food, a safe place to sleep, and emotional support” says Rod Kopp, CEO of Montana Red Cross. “We urge anyone who lives in the area to keep listening to news reports and to heed evacuation orders immediately as the path and intensity of a wildfire can change unexpectedly.” Here’s what you can do to make the evacuation process as safe and comfortable as possible: □ Wear protective clothing, even in hot weather. Including sturdy shoes, cotton or woolen long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from hot embers, and gloves. Take a dry handkerchief to protect your face. Smoke can make it difficult to breathe, damaging breathing passages or triggering respiratory distress. □ Take your Emergency Preparedness Kit. Having items such as prescription medications, copies of identification and important paperwork, non-perishable food, bottled water and a supply of cash already assembled will make you more comfortable and confident while you are away from home. □ Lock your home. Others may evacuate after you or return before you. Secure your house as you normally would. □ Take your pets with you. If it is not safe for you, it is not safe for them. Red Cross emergency shelters cannot accept pets unless they are service animals, but family, friends, pet-friendly motels and boarding facilities can possibly shelter your animals while you stay at our shelter. Animal welfare organizations may also set up temporary pet shelters in the area. We will update you with any information we receive regarding temporary pet shelters. □ Follow the evacuation route and directions provided by local emergency officials. It’s important that you do not detour from the route provided by officials – it is the safest route! □ Register with the Red Cross Safe and Well website. If you are affected by a wildfire, this public site provides a way for you to register yourself and communicate your well-being to your family members. You can input information directly, or, via phone, ask a friend or loved one to register your status so others will know you are OK. The site is accessible via redcross.org. □ Download the Red Cross Wildfire, Shelter, and First Aid apps. The free apps put expert advice for everyday emergencies at your fingertips. The apps are available for direct download from the Apple or Google Play for Android app stores or at redcross.org. □ Keep listening for updates, as the intensity and the path of the wildfire can change quickly, and without notice. Residents who have not yet been evacuated but whose homes may be at risk should prepare for evacuation NOW. You can help people affected by disasters like wildfires, as well as countless other crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit redcross.org/montana or call 1-800-ARC-MONT (1-800-272-6668) to donate. Contributions may also be sent to American Red Cross of Montana, 1300 28th Street South, Great Falls, MT 59405.
