The course tutor is David Adkins and it is open to anyone from the MTNZ membership. You can attend either the two day course or the one day course (Sunday). More exciting news - we will also be running two other courses on the Sunday – production management (morning) presented by Ngaire Holmes and stage management (afternoon) presented by Mark Betty. The detail for these courses we are still working on but if you are interested in attending any of the Auckland courses, please email [email protected] and register your interest and be first “in the know” A Brief Outline of the directing course is as follows: Saturday - Day 1 – Directing Musicals - the next step Practical exercises in dramatic direction • Practical exercise in setting movement (not dance) to music • Consideration of set design in direction – what to ask for • Further explorations of “the vision” and how to create it • Further discussion on the role of the director as Leader/Visionary • Exploration of technical rehearsals (who’s really in charge!) Sunday Day 2 - Lighting for Directors • The very basics (only) of lanterns, dimmers, boards and software, presented from the view point of what they do (not how they work) • Plotting, why it takes so darn long and what you can do about it • The creation of mood through light • The implications of color on a scene • Lighting as a special effect vs ambiance • What not to do!!!! and what not to let your lighting people do Directing Musicals – An Introduction - 30 – 31 August 2014 – CHRISTCHURCH At CPIT – NASDA Campus The course is intended as an introduction to Directing Musicals (hence the name!) and is most suitable for those who have never directed at all. It concentrates on relationships, basic stage craft, administration (rehearsal schedules etc) and how (and what) to communicate to other departments of a show. Common past participants have been those looking to direct in the future, those who’ve tried and struggled, those who’ve directed plays and are looking to try musicals, performers looking to better understand their craft, production managers and committee members with an interest in “the other side”. Participants leave with a broad understanding of the structure of a musical and the management team, a little practical experience, a long list of don’ts and a whole heap of example hand-outs including a very detailed rehearsal schedule, props list, directors lighting notes, wardrobe list, running list, character assignment list, audition documents (and so on). Agenda topics for Day One to include • The roles of the management team (Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, Production Manager etc); What does a director actually do; The vision; Responsibilities; The need to educate; Preserving the illusion; Selecting a show; Time table formulas; People; The rehearsal schedule; Preparing and meetings; The crew; Auditions; Rehearsals; Dealing with beginners and prima dona’s; Common directing errors; What happens after opening; Plus a whole heap of other little bits and pieces and information Sunday 5 June – Practical directing and script work Today is a practical exercise with participants “directing” each other using scripts provided by David from the previous day. We can also announce for Christchurch ONE DAY COURSE - MUSICAL DIRECTING 101 We are still working on the course content, however, we can confirm that the hugely talented, respected and well known musical director Richard Marrett will be facilitating this course. At this stage it is scheduled for the Sunday. Huge thanks to Richard and NASDA for their support with the running of this course and to Glen and Karen Ruske of BOUNCE NZ for their on-going support and sponsorship of these schools. We are also intending to run on the Sunday a stage management and production management course as per Auckland – presenters TBC and we are working through the details now To register your interest to attend any of the courses in Auckland or Christchurch, please contact MTNZ Administrator Kate [email protected] We will open the registrations for the courses early next year.
