MUSICAL FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK....... (and others too) Tonight I heard a song on the radio that I havent heard in years and it brought back both personal and professional memories. Before I get into that...let me say this.... I worked for 25 years in a church and quit basically due to this wanna be associate pastor who knew more about music than i did....at least that is what he thought. Here is how the song goes, he would tell us.... No, not that way but this way...... he would say... Here, I have the recording of the song right here. I learned quickly that a band should sound like the sound they want....NOT like U2 or the Beatles or some Christian rock singer. Why shouldnt we sound like the Beatles? Because we arent the freaking Beatles.....!!!! Still to this day, i hear people in churches and in bars going Thats not how it goes. Yes, they base it on the album. Billy Joel once told a great story. He said he did Piano Man about 750 times professionally before he recorded it. Each time was different. The 751th time was the recording and it was different..... and for the past 30 years every time he plays it, it is different. People still go up to him and say You didnt play the way it right. He still says, to this day, that he never played it the same way twice. Tonight, I heard a song that had a great influence on my life. I havent heard this song since I was 11 years old and my parents, for some reason, bought me this album. (I am extremely grateful that bought it for me as it totally influenced my life!) It was the late, great Maynard Ferguson playing Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was incredible on so many levels!!! (Thanks parents!) I listened to that song 1000 times and thought it was incredible! Then I got the chance to hear Simon & Garfunkels recording.... it was extremely disappointing. I love them...dont get me wrong....but damn... Maynard got it right! Tonight, I heard Maynard play it for the first time since I was 11. I stayed in my car in the parking lot listening to it..... and I realized.... it is OK to do things differently. Use the talents you have to make the best of what you have in front of you. DONT FREAKING COPY SHIT... put your mark on what you do. Make it yours! If you like.... here is the Maynard Ferguson version of Bridge Over Troubled Water.... https://youtube/watch?v=c7gBqVGr7x0
