MVP Opens Registration for History Course Museum Volunteers of the Philippines (MVP) announces the opening of registration for the 2013-14 edition of their class “Philippines: Past and Present”. It is a hands-on, seminar style course that features an in-depth treatment of Philippine history from pre-Hispanic times up to the present. Students will meet once a week at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell Center, Makati City from mid September 2013 to early April, 2014. The course features presentations by module leaders, guest speakers, field trips, and active student participation. The course has become popular among expatriates and local residents alike who are interested in learning more about the cultural and historical background of the Philippines. This will be the 25th year for MVP to offer the Philippine course. The organization has always been dedicated to fostering better understanding of Filipino culture and history. Much of their volunteer work is carried out together with the local museums which preserve historical and cultural artifacts. The history class originally began as a course for docents, or museum guides for the Ayala Museum’s dioramas on Philippine history. It now has a wider, more general appeal. Participation has therefore broadened through the years. Although the class is taught in English, it has always been sensitive to the needs of non-native English language speakers. Opportunities for student participation are provided through presentations, being part of reaction or discussion panels, or doing research work. It is a chance to sharpen communications skills in a relaxed, multi-national environment, thus developing better self confidence. The class begins on 18 September 2013, and will end on 9 April 2014, with breaks for local holidays and Christmas. The class is organized into 5 modules: Early History prior to 1521, Spanish Rule from 1521 to 1898, American and Japanese Periods from 1898 thru 1946, Independent Period from 1946 thru 1986, and Modern Era after EDSA (1986 to the present). Slots are limited so early enrollment is encouraged. For further information and registration, please send email to mvpcourse@yahoo
