MY 2 CENTS! when i first went to ComicCon, things were like this: Aug 13–16, 1992 San Diego Conv. Center, Double Tree Hotel: (you read right, it was in two places) Line-up: Francis Ford Coppola, Creig Flessel, Bill Griffith, Todd McFarlane, Diane Noomin,Rowena, William Shatner, Gilbert Shelton, Lewis Shiner, Mr. T, Gary Trousdale, Vernor Vinge, Kirk Wise, with unlisted stands with Jim lee and Erik Larsen I went and bought hard to find, valuable comicbooks (my main goal) for my collection at a cheaper price than what the price guide said they were. I (little me) showed my drawings to and got some inspiring words from comicbook artists (when no one else gave a SH!!T who they were) witnessed some panels and shops with the major artists at the time. saw a panel on how to self publish (back in the day) and some people were even dressed up as characters (thats what they called it back then, dressing up in a costume) comic book writers had degrees in literature or journalism, and a freebe was usually a personal gift from a vendor to a client. not just tradition nor a gimmick. people werent hating nor trolling, but were excited to get some paper in their hands and were eager to chip-in to help the indies get by. we, the oddballs had a place to be normal. NOW...sigh ... a grand POPculture show. Wow! we geeks came alooong way in the new millenium (eye roll). Now SDCC is probably the LAST place to go buy an old valuable comic (how ironic!) and if youre there for it, then youre the oddball (again) within a larger circus of even larger oddballs. Sure you might get your free comic, bag and pins here and there, you know, those promotionals meant to get you to buy a whole lot more or resell on ebay; and probably the biggest expectations are to see what movie details Marvel and DC... oh! im sorry, I meant Warner and Disney will thumb feed the crowd, check out the new CW heart-rob line-ups, getting a bunch of free stuff about characters, and games that most people never read a comic on or about (and some not ever have a comic) in their lifes. Im not hating nor trolling on the current fandom, thanks to them the industry still exists!... I just... just... remember with nostalgia, (as a true fan, the kind that didnt become a fan because tv tought me to be so) as it was a defining cornerstone experience in my life back then,I remeber when COMIC-con was about the art of COMICS. I guess Its my own fault that Im disapointed of it all. because to an extent Im still gullible enough to be mislead by the name of the whole show: COMIC-CON.
