MY 90s - In that decade, like in the 60s, a lot of things mixed, fused and confused a lot - and hence the creative boom that came with it. As always trying to label things, a lot of people got lost trying to pin up certain acts (Faith No More being a case example). Others just got swept with a scene, as it happened with the whole grunge thing, whatever it was meant to be in hindsight. Such was the case with Sonic Youth, who are now viewed as these indie icons somewhat related to those Seattle-ish days. Friendships with Kurt Cobain and productions by Butch Vig aside, I think they are much more what I would call mainstream avant-garde superstars. From the early Glenn Branca days to Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldos current solo experimental efforts, it all breathes New York in the 80s, its art, its flux(us), its underground no wave sonic punk craziness. That they were lucky enough to have hit singles and be associated with a hip scene is fortuitous. They are still what they always were: sonic tinkers. All my respect for that.
