MY INVESTIGATION OF THE MURDER OF ZEBEDEO MAINA: Let us corroborate the evidence as provided by the two leading daily newspapers: EVD 1: They then arrived at a local restaurant and were informed the men believed to be behind the kidnapping were hiding there when Maina was prompted to alight and walk there. “As he approached the entrance of the restaurant, a confrontation ensued and he was shot from the back. It is not clear how he was shot,” said Ochola. EVD 2: The two men who confronted the detective demanding that he identifies himself had been drinking sodas for more than three hours ostensibly passing away time as if waiting for someone. According to an eye witness who requested not to be named, the two men curiously sat on the staircase facing the road approaching Envy Night Club, instead of sipping their drinks inside the bar as other patrons prefer. “One of the two guys was overheard telling the other in Swahili, Ndiye yule( he is the one) before both men stood up and asked the officer to identify himself,” said a mechanic who witnessed the shooting drama. EVD 3 Daniel Nguma Wanyamu, a 27-year-old mechanic with Kitui Youth Polytechnic, said he was walking with his former collegemate George Kavindu Sua, when armed officers confronted them — coincidentally, it was the same time and place Maina met his death. EVD 4: “I only realised our attackers and captors were policemen when they took us to Kitui Police Station and reported at the reception that they had come with “mahabusu wapya” (new inmates – meaning suspects). EVD 5: The men would later identify themselves as police officers at a nursing home, about 500 metres from the scene of shooting. The four men, armed with rifles, reportedly asked nurses at Neema Hospital to “treat the suspect they had shot”. EVD 6: “All I know is that we were following this child and the signal was indicating the abductors were in those areas (Kitui). Am also informed the child was rescued and there was a shooting incident. Am yet to receive full information,” said Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo. EVD 7 A witness told the Nation that Zebedeo alighted from a saloon car that had stopped outside a bar in the town. As he walked towards the bar, two men who were sitted on a staircase at the entrance stood up after one of them said, “Ndiye yule” (That’s him). The witness heard one of them tell Maina “Jitambulishe!” (identify yourself.) At that point Zebedeo reached for the waist ostensibly to pull out a pistol but no sooner had he moved his hands, than three shots rent the air, and he fell to the ground. The witness said two shots hit the policeman in the back, suggesting they were fired by people behind him. His car had other officers who had accompanied him and there was another vehicle with three occupants a few metres away. His colleagues drove off after the shooting and reported the matter to the local police commander at the nearby station. MY HYPOTHESIS: Zebedeo had approached the Criminal Investigation Department situated separately from the police station requesting officers to accompany him. It appears the abductors had requested for ransom which was to be brought by Maina. The signal (EVD7)which was indicating the abductors were in Envy Night club must have prompted the officers from the headquarters to alert the area police that a crime was about to be committed at the Club , but failed to provide further details fearing that the details could leak to the abductors. Alternatively the abductors might have alerted the police that a robbery was about to be committed at the Night Club. Therefore the regular police therefore laid an ambush. When maina arrived the regular police( in a car with three occupants (EVD7)) thought that the robbers had arrived. They asked Maina who was metres ahead of them to identify himself(EVD2), but upon realizing that Maina was reaching for his pistol, they quickly whisked theirs and shot him. Daniel Nguma Wanyamu who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident was mistaken as an accomplish and shot in the thigh. The policemen who had accompanied Zebedeo took off on realizing that their fellow comrades who had not recognized them in the vehicle had felled Maina. They went straight to the police station to report the matter. Meanwhile the officers at the scene of crime were almost immediately informed that they MIGHT have felled there fellow policeman, that is when they got concerned with the health of Zebedeo and took him to Neema Hospital. CONCLUSON: Zebedeo was gunned down by fellow police officers who mistook him for a robber. If you doubt wait for the charges in court.
