MY RUNNER UP LIST OF 2014: To begin, this is all entirely - TopicsExpress

MY RUNNER UP LIST OF 2014: To begin, this is all entirely opinionated, meaning that what o say is not fact but a cumulative thought and favor Ive grown towards these games. You could go as far as to call this the Honorable Mentions list. (P.S. I actually played exactly 10 games released in 2014, odd right?) Without further ado, lets get into it! 10) Tomodachi Life (3DS) This game is quirky, weird, goofy and shameless, which is unbelievably entertaining and infinitely satisfying. You likely start off with you and a couple friends, but in this game quantity IS quality, as adding more residents from Walter White to Shigeru Miyamoto himself to your game adds facilities, shops, and tons more interaction that allows your game to grow. Sadly, the randomness does have a limit and once youve reached the pinnacle of seeing it all, the enjoyment flatlines. Id call this more of a spectacle than a game, honestly. 9) Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars (3DS) Theres a certain charm to a silly game that draws me to it, increase that attraction by about ten fold when its a game with the Atlus seal of approval on it! Conception 2 is... Odd. I mean, you make star children with whichever Waifus you want, and use those kids to help you fight. Thats not what weirds me out. A good Atlus game can balance silliness and seriousness and make them pull the right emotions at the right time: a cornerstone to story-telling for the Persona series, as one example. My problem though, stems from how imbalanced serious and silly are, I couldnt really get motivated to play the game most of the time, and I guess you could attribute that to the cause. All in all though, this game offers up a unique twist to the standard turn-based battle structure and hides a lot of cleverness beneath the boob jokes and envious dialogue. 8) JoJos Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle (PS3) To start, I love the JoJo series and yes, Ive read some of the manga as well as watched what bits of the show are currently available online. With that out of the way, I can attest that All-Star Battle blends the surreal style of the manga, and the signature skills of all the characters involved in the game, then packages it all together with a (mostly) faithful summarized re-telling of the entire series, which is something a lot of fighting games lack. I mean, even down to the very minuscule details, like giving a skill slot to Josephs signature running away gag, its all handled with care; hell, TAUNTING is an important feature of this game and plays a big role competitively! My only problem (as with fighters in general) is that it loses a substantial replay value without friends (or rather friends actually interested in the series). But as for sound, style, graphics and gameplay, its simply Bizarre! 7) Mario Kart 8 It might be a little surprising that this game isnt in my top 5, because all I really do is praise it to the sun and back when people try to tell me that Wii Us are a waste of money. I mean, this game is BEAUTIFUL. I find it so hilarious that developers try to one-up each other by trying to make the most realistic looking game, and then Nintendo just uses that trademark cartoony style to full effect and it looks breath-taking, charming and marvelous. The driving is solid, the items are well balanced, and the tracks are a great mixed bag. I only have a couple qualms with this game and its enough to keep it placed here. First off, why do we get baby forms, metal forms, and suit forms of available characters? Seriously, you can fill a small tournament with about four different racers by selecting the multiple incarnations of the SAME CHARACTER. If you can make Bowser a racer, anything is possible and expand that horizon. My other qualm is less to do with the game and more about Nintendos online infrastructure, I just couldnt play online with any of my friends because of my sub-par internet. I could write a lot more, but theres one more game I need to get to.. 6) Hyrule Warriors This game was a hairline away from making it into my top 5 but I pulled for another game youll see most likely tomorrow. Anyways, Hyrule Warriors is a pretty swell game - it looks good, but its not as stunning as MK8, its solid but the polish only goes so far. The game is a nice blend of Dynasty Warriors and Legend of Zelda, with the over-the-top attacks and need for items to progress and tons of interesting characters to choose from. It features about four modes total: Story, Challenge, Free and Adventure - with Adventure probably taking the cake for the most replay value. Repetitiveness could almost be considered a cornerstone for this game though, and thats a huge factor for any game these days as it really cripples the overall product if not implemented well. luckily, completionist are given Golden Skulltulas and Heart Containers/Pieces to collect that are limited in availability; mostly requiring a specific difficulty, Character, weapon, or any combination of the three to gain 100%. Adventure Mode takes this one step further; beginning in a style hailing a throwback to the original Legend of Zelda, the player is tasked with moving one square at a time and initiating battles on those squares to unlock assortments of goodies, and ultimately more squares to move onto. This gameplay method is also very demanding, as you may have to use a character or weapon you dont like - which might just give you a new favorite character. This type of progression is paramount to unlocking four characters, a slew of alternate color schemes, and new weapon types. With the season pass in my possession, Im given access to all the DLC packs released bi-monthly and they REALLY make a difference! You get a new adventure map, new alternate costumes, new weapon types and even new characters to play as, which is a LOT more bang for your buck using only twenty dollars than a lot of you DLC options. Well, there ya have it: my honorable mentions list of 2014! Starting tomorrow Im going to name off one of my top 5 each day onward. And lastly, keep in mind Im only covering the games Ive owned and played this year, its not definitive of anything beyond my tastes so please dont feel offended. -TroopdaKroopda
