MY SOUTH AFRICA ADVENTURE - DAY 8 (Tuesday, June 17, 2014) CAPE TOWN - We loaded up and headed out on a Cape Peninsula Tour. The southern end of the Peninsular has 2 points of interest. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, which is the lowest part of the Cape! It took us about 2 1/2 hours to make it to the lowest point. We traveled thru several of the bays: Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno, and Hout Bay. We were very high up in the mountains and just in totally amazement over Gods creation. The landscape, the beaches, the rocks, the animals, everything was magnificent! We saw a lot of seaweed in certain parts of the beaches. The South Africans actually harvest the seaweed and use it in toothpaste, shampoos, supplements, and for sushi, another clever idea. Our first stop was Hout Bay, which is a functioning harbor. We shopped around for a bit. We ran into Joyce Morgan-Dansfords ( our former news anchor) uncle all the way in SA. Small world! He lives in GA and was visiting Cape Town and Joburg. The weather was truly on our side today, and at times we were peeling off our jackets! We continued on our journey making several stops along the way. We came across this huge ostrich, who Chimeka named Herb. He was first spotted him walking in the middle of the road. Ostrich meat is available in a lot,of the restaurants. I know Gerald has tried it, and I believe Chimeka has too. We finally arrived to the Cape of Good Hope, and this is when things got a little hilarious- sort of...below is my god-daughter Chimeka Hodges telling of the little drama in her own words. I went to the Toilets and there was no one in there, but me. When I came out of the stall, there was a Baboon, digging thru the trash can! I stopped in my tracks, she looked at me and I looked at her. Im assuming it was a female baboon, because after all she was in the female toilets. She gave me one of those what you looking at looks, which made me quickly look away. I remembered what Frank said, and I just walked by her like it was normal for us to share a bathroom. Although my heart was beating rapidly! Baboons are very common in the peninsular! as a matter of fact we saw a family of baboons on our way down on the side of the road. The baby baboons were getting scolded by their mother. The group wanted to go up to the lighthouse. You could either go by foot or take a train up. I personally didnt want to do either because I am petrified of heights. It took alot for me, just to be able to ride thru the mountains. I finally decided that I would at least take the train up, but wanted a quick snack first. This is when things got out of hand. I was eating my snack, minding my own business, and a baboon came out of no where and snatched the shortbread out of my hand and ran away! My family watched, but no one gave me any warnings that I was being preyed upon. Can you all believe that?? People started pulling out their cameras and the workers shooed him away with a stick. Now I am assuming that this Baboon was a male because he was rough and sneaky...lol! After he was shooed away he came back peeking over the wall looking around before he snatched the wrapper that he dropped and took off again. The monkeys really had it in for me today! Theres an embellished story thats going around, that I am sure my godmother will give you all the details!... LOl But I am alive and well. The girl warned us to make sure we put our food away, but I forgot, just that quickly. The shortbread was calling my name, and apparently it was calling the Baboons name too. I probably was attacked by Earl, the alpha-male Baboon that Frank warned us about! So needless to say since my attack I have researched Baboons, and I now know more about them than ever before and they are very, very interesting and smart. Just to give you all an idea what I was up against. This wasnt the same Baboon, we met him on the side of the road. All I have to say about the Cape of Good Hope, if, you all visit you better Hope that you dont get robbed by a baboon, they are,everywhere!...lol!! No, but seriously if you keep your food put away and just walk around like they arent there youll be fine! LOL. Now back to the updates! We also saw where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet! It was such a beautiful sight. We had lunch in Simons Town, with a nice view over looking the peninsular. Food was great!! Simons Town reminds you of New Orleans French Quarters. There are 15,000 members of the Navy stationed in Simons Town. We also visited a penguin park. There were lots of penguins. Well, we will be flying out of Cape Town in the morning to start our 2 day safari. Lions, tigers... but no bears here in Africa. My assessment of Cape Town is that it is more laid back in comparison to Joburg. Chimeka and I agreed that we would rather live in Joburg, and visit Cape Town often! Interesting Fact: SA is home to more kinds of mammals than North and South America combined; or Europe and Asia together. I hope you enjoy the pictures!
