MY THOUGHT FOR TODAY: I ALWAYS WONDER WHY THE EASTERN PROVINCE - TopicsExpress

MY THOUGHT FOR TODAY: I ALWAYS WONDER WHY THE EASTERN PROVINCE OF SIERRA LEONE IS NOTORIOUS FOR BAD THINGS. FIRST, IT WAS THE DEADLY LASSA FEVER INFECTION; THEN THE START OF THE REBEL WAR; AND NOW IT IS THE EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE. I WONDER IF THERE IS AN ANSWER TO THIS PERPLEXING PHENOMENON ?? Historically the Eastern province (in red on the map below) has been regarded as hyperendemic for Lassa fever, with outbreaks most frequently reported from Kenema and Kailahun districts (towns circled in blue). Patients returning from these areas are at highest risk of infection. The risk of infection is lower in other areas of the country, and is lowest in the Freetown Peninsula.
