Historically the Eastern province (in red on the map below) has been regarded as hyperendemic for Lassa fever, with outbreaks most frequently reported from Kenema and Kailahun districts (towns circled in blue). Patients returning from these areas are at highest risk of infection. The risk of infection is lower in other areas of the country, and is lowest in the Freetown Peninsula.
