MYTHOLOGY SERIES 5 TODAY’S SUBJECT MYTHOLOGY OF CHURNING OF OCEAN MILK OR SAMUDRA MANTHAN - DID IT REALLY HAPPEN? HOW LORD SHIVA TURNED NEELKANTH? Lord Indra, the King of Devas, while riding on an elephant, came across a sage named Durvasa who offered him a special garland. Lord Indra accepted the garland, placing it on the trunk of the elephant as a test to prove that he was not an egoistic God. The elephant, knowing that Lord Indra had no control over his own ego, threw the garland to the ground. This enraged the sage as the garland was a dwelling of Sri (fortune) and was to be treated as prasada. Durvasa Muni cursed Lord Indra and all devas to be bereft of all strength, energy, and fortune. In battles that followed this incident, Devas were defeated and Asuras led by king Bali gained control of the universe. Devas sought help from God Vishnu who advised them to treat Asuras in a diplomatic manner. Devas formed an alliance with asuras to jointly churn the ocean for the nectar of immortality and to share it among them. However, Lord Vishnu told Devas that He would arrange that they alone obtain the nectar. Mount Mandara, a spur of Mount Meru, the world axis, was torn out to use as a churning stick and was steadied at the bottom of the ocean by Vishnu in his avatar (incarnation) as the tortoise Kurma. Theasuras held the head of the naga Vasuki, who was procured for a churning rope, and the gods held his tail. When Vasuki’s head hit the rocks and he vomited forth poison that threatened to fall into the ocean and contaminate the amrita, then god Shiva took it and held it in his throat, a feat that turned his throat blue. Thus, Lord Shiva came to be known as Neelkant or the blue necked. When the amrita appeared, the gods and the asuras fought over its possession, though they had originally agreed to share it equally. After many adventures, it was finally consumed by the gods, who were thus restored in strength. -Questions arise that whether the SAMUDRA MANTHAN really happened? Or it never happened in reality? Is it an allegorical tale about something else? then how Did Lord Shiva’s neck turned blue... READ RUDRA TRILOGY BOOK 1 TO KNOW MORE....
