Ma--- Ma--- Ma Call your horse! I had a job translating for a chinese horse magazine while in Spain. We went walking through the fields looking for the horses in a big farm. It is customaray in western spain to raise the horses as if they were wild. They run freely on large farms that have a variety of natural grains like wild oats and acorn trees . Finding the horses in such a big farm can be quite difficult. As we walked into the field, the chinese friends started calling ma which means horse in Madnarin. On the otherside of the field the spaniards were calling ma for the horses to come. The Chinese told us they call horses that way because ma means horse. The spaniards told us they called ma because it was short for coma or come eat. The same behavio is exhibited in the Spaniard and the Chinese to call a horse. The result is the same. The horses come but the reason they use the word Ma is completely different. This is an excellent example of the pitfalls that can happen when learning a foreign language Ma is easy to remember it is horse but when used for horses in Spanish it has a compeltely different meaning although the result is the same. The horse comes! mandaringarden.org/Culture/2014-03-25/3754.html
