Mabior Garang de Mabior Arrested For Attempting to Assassinate President Kiir For Immediate Release 25/08/2014 The Ethiopian Security personnel protecting the heads of state of IGAD arrested the son of late Dr. John Garang de Mabior on Monday at 3 PM in Addis Ababa. Mabior Garang was caught at the reception of President Kiir’s hotel with a 9 MM Pistol cocked with six bullets. For security reasons, I cannot mention the name of the hotel given the heightened security threat against the live of South Sudan President. After the Ethiopian security personnel disarmed him, he was taken to a Central Prison in Addis Ababa. When he was interrogated, he said that “he wanted to face President Kiir for destroying the legacy of his father”. This statement established a motive of an assassination attempt and his case is being treated as a criminal case as well as an act of terrorism. The Ethiopian Security will investigate the entire leadership of the SPLM-IO to find out whether Mabior Garang acted alone or he conspired with the leadership of Riek Machar to kill President Kiir. Investigation will continue on Tuesday to find out more associates of Mabior Garang within the rebel leadership. The Government of South Sudan is appealing to the people of South Sudan to stay calm. We are assuring the public that our President is safe. The Ethiopian Government took the matter very serious and those who are behind this attempt within the rebel leadership will be brought to justice as soon as possible. Source GB
