Madonna SLS Students: Consider this ... Dont open your laptop. The following is an excellent article about the use of laptops in college classes. This also applies to phone use (texting, too). Heres a summary, with a few additions of my own. 1) Multitasking doesnt work. As much as you think you can attend to the teacher and your laptop, you cant. 2) Youll be tempted to do other things on your laptop while in class. And you will. 3) You, AND THE STUDENTS AROUND YOU will perform worse in class. Yes, other students are affected by your laptop use. 4) You will distract the professor. 5) Writing notes by hand helps you to focus and remember more than typing notes on a computer. 6) In an ASL class, it really helps to be able to drawn and use special notations that arent easy to type. 7) In an ASL class, you need to keep your eyes up. This is essential for language learning, and is also culturally appropriate. 8) In a visual classroom, you draw unnecessary attention to yourself when you focus on a laptop or phone. As we go into the next semester, set your laptop and phone aside: It will be better for you, and for your colleagues who are learning along with you. Have a great semester! Dan
