Madras eye...............................................How to Treat Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) Conjunctivitis, or pink eye is an infection of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelid.[1] Infections happen when the eye is exposed to a virus, bacteria or other irritant. Read this article to learn how to treat this condition. Ad Edit Part One of Two: Treating Conjunctivitis 1Identify the symptoms. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness or swelling of the eye, blurred vision, eye pain, gritty feeling in the eyes, increased tearing, itching of the eye, and sensitivity to light.[2] 2See your doctor. Before seeking a treatment option, you will need to confirm that the infection you have is indeed conjunctivitis. You will also need to determine the cause of the infection in order to choose the right medication. Your eye doctor can identify an infection by examining your eyes and using a swab to test for conjunctivitis.[3] 3Get the proper treatment. The right treatment will depend on what caused the infection in the first place. Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with allergy medications, while bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotics in the form of eyedrops.[4] Viral conjunctivitis usually goes away on its own after 2-3 days.[5] In some cases, allergic infections go away on their own if you avoid contact with the agent you are allergic to.[6] 4Ease symptoms. You can soothe some of the discomfort associated with an infection by applying either warm or cool compresses (whichever feels best) to your closed eyes.[7] Use a different compress on each eye to avoid spreading the infection, and use a new compress each time.[8] If you wear contacts, remove them and wear glasses until your symptoms go away.[9] 5Avoid spreading the infection. Conjunctivitis can easily spread from one person to the other. Avoid touching or rubbing your eye, and be sure to wash your hands immediately afterward if you do. Avoid sharing eye makeup, sunglasses, or towels with other people. If you use a tissue to wipe your eye, be sure to properly dispose of it in the trashcan.[10] Do not go to school or work until your symptoms have cleared up.[11] When wiping drainage from your eye, always use a clean tissue to avoid spreading the infection back into your eye.[12] Children are especially susceptible to these kinds of infections, so avoid direct contact with children.[13] Edit Part Two of Two: Preventing Conjunctivitis 1Know the causes. Most people catch conjunctivitis by coming into contact with others who are infected. Other potential causes include allergies, bacteria, certain diseases, chemical exposure, fungi, use of contact lenses, and chlamydia.[14] 2Practice good hygiene. Infections can be avoided through preventative measures like washing hands often (especially before rubbing your eyes), replacing eye makeup often, cleaning and replacing contact lenses often, and not sharing eye makeup, towels, or handkerchiefs with other people.[15] Ad Edit Video Edit Warnings See your healthcare provider if symptoms last for longer than 4 days.[16] 3 Helpful? 2 Edit Related wikiHows How to Care for Pink EyeHow to Treat a StyeHow to Deal With Pink EyeHow to Prevent the Spread of PinkeyeHow to Diagnose Pink Eye Ad Article Info
