Magis Ireland shares a beautiful LifeBlog from Spirit Radio Homing Instinct Homing Instinct is an amazing thing... The Brent Geese winter here in Ireland but come April they will be departing our shores and heading for an Icelandic stopover before flying on to the high Artic to breed. At around the same time sandmartins, swallows, blackcaps, willow warblers and cuckoos will start arriving here from Africa.. There is just a whole lot of bird traffic going on that completely passes us by - unless we are really tuned into it. The birds are all somehow guided by what we term the homing instinct. Amazing isnt it.. we get excited about the GPS in our smartphone.. but God designed his creatures with this kind of software built in. In one displacement experiment conducted in the 1950s, a seabird moved from Wales to Boston- returned to its Welsh Burrow within two weeks! Hows that for Homing Instinct? We humans have also been designed with a kind of homing instinct. We all have a kind of inbuilt guidance system or internal voice that helps guide us-through the maze of choices in this life-to bring us to our ultimate home in the next life. Our homing instinct is sometimes called a conscience. If we examine cultures, and tribes from one side of the globe to the other,- we find that conscience everywhere adheres to a common code. It is right to protect the weak, it is wrong to kill the innocent. It is right to respect your neighbours belongings, it is wrong to steal. It is right to speak the truth, it is wrong to commit falsehood. When we follow our conscience we experience a kind of internal peace, a sense of rightness. When we refuse to listen to this homing instinct, we just feel restless-irregardless of the excuses we come up with to justify our actions. One of the problems of having a conscience is that while it tells us what we should and shouldnt do, it doesnt give us the power to do the right thing. It is at this point that we have to cry out to God to give us grace, to do the right thing. Lord Jesus Christ, help us today to listen and follow the voice you planted in our hearts.
