Magnitude-5.7 quake hits Visayas By: Louine Hope Conserva and Angelica Tapalla A MAGNITUDE 5.7 quake shook Northern Panay around 4:05 p.m. Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. Phivolcs said the epicenter of the temblor, which was tectonic in origin, is located 5 kilometers southeast of Culasi, Antique where Intensity VI was felt. Tectonic quakes are caused by the sudden movement of the earths crust caused by the release of stress accumulated along geologic faults or by volcanic activity. The movement of the West Panay Fault which stretches from Capiz to Antique caused the quake. The tremor was felt at Intensity V in Kalibo, Aklan; Sebaste, Pandan, Laua-an and Libertad (Antique). Phivolcs explained that an Intensity V earthquake is categorized as strong and generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Strong shaking and rocking is felt throughout buildings, hanging objects swing violently and shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable. San Jose, Sibalom and San Remegio in Antique experienced Intensity IV. Intensity III was felt in La Carlota City, Roxas City and Iloilo City. Tremors were also felt in Bacolod City and Capiz. In a radio interview, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said they are still confirming if the quake damaged areas of Antique. Solidum shrugged of reports that the quake could trigger a tsunami. Although no injuries and damages on infrastructure were reported, Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershocks. Employees of government agencies, private offices and schools were sent home early after the quake. Intensity VI is considered very strong and people are advised to stay calm to avoid further injuries.
