For Immediate Release – January 14, 2015 Contact: Marylon Barkan 205.516.4506 [email protected] Main Street Alabama Begins Intensive Study of Decatur Market Decatur—Main Street Alabama began an intensive study of Decatur market today by hosting an organizational kick off meeting with representatives from the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DDRA) and Jay Schlinsog of Downtown Professionals Network (DPN) from Franklin, Tennessee. DPN is charged with completing a full market analysis that will include implementable strategies for growing businesses in downtown Decatur. “I am excited to begin work in Decatur,” said Jay Schlinsog, President of the Downtown Professionals Network, “the downtown community has strong leadership through the DDRA and the final report will include implementable strategies for strengthening the districts offerings that will be based on the primary market research we will be conducting.“ Main Street Alabama is sponsoring the study for Decatur as a part of the services that are offered through the organization to their Designated Communities. “The Decatur market analysis is an important piece to position downtown for growth,” stated Mary Helmer, President and State Coordinator of Main Street Alabama. “It is necessary to determine market leakage and analyze what downtown Decatur can reasonably recapture to strengthen already existing businesses and recruit new businesses to the district. Tools such as this market analysis are a key reason communities pursue Designation for our downtown revitalization program. The insights that we will yield from this study will give DDRA clear direction when it comes to addressing market leakage, recruiting entrepreneurs to address weaknesses and building on our downtown’s strengths.” Rick Paler, Director of the Downtown Decatur Redevelopment Authority stated, “Main Street Alabama is taking us to the next level in facilitating our in-depth downtown market analysis. This analysis, will be one of the most critical tools that we will have at our disposal in order to expand the continued economic development of our downtown and moving it to a higher degree of success.” Main Street Alabama focuses on bringing jobs, dollars and people back to Alabama’s historic communities. Economic development is at the heart of our efforts to revitalize downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts. #MyDecaturAL
