Major sins #9. Cutting off the ties of kinship. Maintaining the ties of kinship is obligatory to the extent that one is able to do it, starting with the closest and then the next closest, whether they are Muslims or non Muslims(within set limit by shareeah). There is a great deal of goodness in it and it serves many interests. Severing the ties of kinship is a major sin, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allaah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight” [Muhammad 47: 22-23] And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Al-Qati’ (the person who severs the bond of kinship) will not enter paradise.” (Bukhari & Muslim) In another narration he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The word ‘Ar- Rahim’ (womb) derives its name from Ar-Rahman (i.e., one of the names of Allah). So whosoever keeps good relation with it (womb i.e., kith and kin), Allah will keep good relations with him and whosoever will sever it (i.e., severs his bonds of kith and kin) Allah too will sever His relation with him.” (Bukhari)
