Make your life easier by using Grandmas Rule. It sounds like this: As soon as youve done X (i.e. your homework), you can do Y (i.e. play on the computer). As soon as youve cleaned up the toys, we can go to the park. When youre all ready for bed, Ill read you a story. Grandmas Rule is all about when/then. It is NOT a bribe - which is all about if/then. Youre firmly in charge, not giving your child a choice but rather a statement of fact. The unpleasant stuff comes before the fun and games and children - ever eager for the fun and games - are motivated to cooperate with chores and responsibilities in order to get to the good stuff. Try doing it Grandmas way and let us know what happens!
