Malacanang on Thursday said it cannot grant salary increases for government workers, but performance-based incentives continue. This, despite a Pulse Asia survey that showed the Aquino administration faring poorly on the issue of improving the pay of workers. Presidential Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said the Department of Budget and Management is coordinating with Congress on how to find additional sources for funds to implement a pay hike. He added the government already gives performance-based incentives for exemplary workers. He also said the Palaces economic team continues to try to cut down prices of basic goods. The countrys inflation rate slowed down to 4.4 percent in September due to lower food and utility costs. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that inflation slowed to 4.4 percent in September from 4.9 percent in August. NEDA expects that the inflation rate for 2014 will still be within the government’s full year target of 3 to 5 percent. In January to September, inflation reached the high end of the target at 4.4 percent.
