Malawi court revokes bail for K120m suspect Lilongwe Magistrates Court has revoked the bail of one of the suspects in the on-going rampant fraud at Capital Hill after he failed to surrender his travelling documents per his earlier bail conditions. The court made the decision following an application by the state saying the suspect Patrick Sithole, an Accounts Assistant at the Department of Environment earlier caught with cash amounting to K120 million, had failed to satisfy his bail conditions. In an interview, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Bruno Kalemba said the court’s decision follows an application by the state after observing that Sithole had not handed in his passport as stipulated in the bail conditions. Kalemba said Sithole had told the prosecution that his passport was with the police but when the statement was verified with the police it transpired that the police did not have it in their custody either. “On Tuesday the defense and state had arguments in the court and on Wednesday a ruling was made by the court that the bail be revoked and right now he has been committed to remand at Maula Prison,” said Kalemba. Kalemba said Sithole, who was charged with exchange control offenses and being found with unexplained property, faces more charges as investigations in his role and that of others continue. “The two charges are currently just holding charges, the charges might increase depending on the investigations,” added Kalemba. Deputy National police spokesperson Kelvin Maigwa said the man will be answering the case whilst in custody. “It is true that as of Wednesday Sithole was taken in by the police and as I am speaking he is at Maula prison,” said Maigwa. Sithole was among the first government employees to be arrested after he was caught with K120million cash stashed in his car at his home in Area 47 with some of the money in foreign currencies. Several arrests have since followed as part of a multi-agency investigation on feared rampant theft of public money that has centred on Capital Hill with a chain of events kick-started by the shooting of Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo.
