Malaysia, South Korea, Boston, Columbine. These tragic events have dominated the news cycle all weekend, and we see the wrenching pain of families awaiting information that is scarce (and poorly managed). For those involved in public communication, including aspiring PR practitioners, I hope you are taking heed. Disasters and tragedies that involve loss of life happen without warning, including in businesses where you least expect them. Please do all that you can, including supplementing formal course work, to understand the fundamentals of crisis communication and crisis management. Everyone knows I think it is essential and no professional education in PR or communication is complete without it.
