Malin man charged in Ashland hotel assault By Vickie Aldous the Medford Mail Tribune A Malin man was indicted on multiple charges Thursday after he allegedly tried to throw a woman off a third-floor balcony of an Ashland hotel and strangle her with a telephone cord. Neil Allen Pinckney, 34, was indicted in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of strangulation, fourth-degree assault, recklessly endangering another person, second-degree criminal mischief, interference with making a police report and attempt to commit second-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, court records show. According to a police affidavit, Pinckney lifted a 40-year-old woman off her feet and attempted to throw her off the third-floor balcony of the Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites on Dec. 7, 2014. He also allegedly knocked her into a bathtub while she was trying to call police for help, then wrapped a telephone cord around her neck. The woman sustained bruises to her arms and neck, the affidavit said. In addition, Pinckney allegedly broke through a hotel door when she tried to lock him out, the affidavit said. It did not say how the two knew each other. Pinckney was arrested by Ashland police the day of the alleged incident and was released from the Jackson County Jail on his own recognizance. He said little in court Thursday, except that he needed to speak to an attorney. Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia said second-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime carrying a minimum 70-month sentence upon conviction. Second-degree assault applies when there are serious physical injuries with or without a dangerous weapon and can take into account an extreme indifference to the value of human life, according to Oregon law.
