Mammal Monday! Swift foxes are one of the smallest wild canids in continental North America. They are about the size of a house cat, and are found throughout the grasslands of western North America. The diagnostic part of a swift fox is their black-tipped tail, as shown in the picture below. Conservation efforts for this species has been ongoing since the early 2000s. When driving throughout the Badlands and surrounding areas, keep your eyes open for them! They are often seen near roadsides during the hours of sunrise and sunset. If spotted, please send information to Sarah Nevison ([email protected]) who is a graduate student studying these unique animals for the next 2 years.
