Man Arrested for Breaking into a WPD Marked Police Cruiser Worcester, MA (September 29, 2014) - On Saturday September 27, 2014 at approximately 6:30 PM, two Worcester police officers working as partners parked their marked police cruiser on Franklin Street next to city hall. The officers exited their cruiser and began to patrol the Worcester City Common on foot, in the rear of city hall. The officers were walking through the common monitoring the activities of the people in the park. As the officers continued to walk through the park one of the officers attention was drawn to a male standing next to the passenger side of their cruiser. The man was suspiciously looking around in all directions as he stood next to the cruiser. At this time the officer observed the male lean into the cruiser through the open window. The man exited the cruiser and stood up and looked around to see if anyone had noticed him. The officers then observed the man lean back inside the cruiser for a second time. The officers ran back to the cruiser and detained the man. The officer quickly noticed that a duffle bag that contained some of his equipment had been tampered with. The officer’s personal GPS was removed from the pouch that it was normally in. It became clear to the officers that the man had attempted to steal the GPS. Based on the officer’s observations, the suspect, identified as John Mahon, 52-years-old of 507 Main Street, Worcester, was placed under arrest and charged with Breaking and Entering into a Motor Vehicle and Attempting to Commit a Crime (Larceny Over the value of $250.00). Mr. Mahon was held at police headquarters until Monday morning where he was then transported and arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
